Ewa Oloyin (Honey Beans) Recipe - Mama Garri

Ewa Oloyin (Honey Beans) Recipe

Here’s a basic outline of how jolloof rice is typically made:

Ewa Oloyin is one of the most loved bean dishes in Nigeria, especially among the Yoruba people. The beans are naturally sweet, soft, and creamy when cooked, making them perfect for a rich and comforting meal.

Ingredients
2 cups Ewa Oloyin (honey beans)
1 small onion (chopped)
2–3 tablespoons palm oil
1–2 fresh peppers or Scotch bonnet (blended or chopped)
1 seasoning cube
Salt to taste
2–4 cups water
Optional: dried fish, smoked fish, or crayfish
Method
Wash the beans thoroughly to remove dirt and stones.
Place the beans in a pot and add enough water to cover them.

Add the chopped onions and cook on medium heat for about 30–40 minutes until the beans begin to soften.
Add palm oil, pepper, seasoning cube, and salt. Stir gently.

Allow the beans to continue cooking until they become very soft and creamy. Add more water if needed.
If using smoked fish or crayfish, add them during the final cooking stage.

Simmer for another 5–10 minutes until the flavours blend together.

How to Serve

Ewa Oloyin is traditionally enjoyed with:

Fried plantains (dodo)
Soft bread
Garri
Pap (ogi)

The beauty of Ewa Oloyin lies in its simplicity — sweet beans slowly cooked with palm oil and pepper until the pot releases a deep, comforting aroma that fills the kitchen. It is humble food, yet rich with memory and warmth.
