Hello! I’m Toyin, the founder of Mama Garri, and I reside by the sea in Kent. My passions include listening to and dancing to Gospel and Afrobeats music while preparing African dishes in my kitchen.
My journey began during a trip to Ibadan, Nigeria, where I sought to connect with my African heritage. Although I was born and raised in London, United Kingdom, I was eager to explore the rich tapestry of my culture, including its people, music, traditions, and cuisine. My Yoruba roots captivate me, and I frequently travel from the UK to Nigeria to immerse myself in the vibrant culture and discover how the unique foods reflect the diversity of the people. This passion led me to delve into the garri industry, a thriving billion-dollar market.
The primary motivation behind starting Mama Garri was to introduce innovative options to the African food industry.
When I'm not busy selling my products online or creating mouthwatering dishes while collaborating with other UK-based African food businesses, you can find me honing my skills in Binary Options trading, developing websites, or exploring various countries around the globe.
In many African countries, plant-based diets have been the norm for generations. African mothers have been cooking indigenous crops such as cassava, yams, beans, flours (yam flour, pounded yam and plantain yam), rice, maize, nuts, egusi mellon, spices, plantains, fruits, vegetable and leafy greens.
This has inspired us at Mama Garri to created some African Inspired plant-based products that we are sure you will enjoy!
Mama Garri's mission? To sprinkle more plant power into your plate and bring on the West African vibes.
Every morning before the sun rose, Mama was already awake.
The kitchen would fill with the soft rhythm of water boiling,
the gentle sifting of garri through her fingers—
those hands, seasoned by years of love, labor, and prayer.
She didn’t just feed us.
She taught us.
How to stretch a meal and multiply joy,
how to speak with our eyes and show strength with a smile.
When we came home tired, garri and groundnuts were waiting.
When school fees came calling, her wrappers became silent sacrifices.
She was the first to rise and the last to rest.
The one who turned “little” into “enough,”
and “enough” into a feast.
Mama was our recipe for survival.
Our flavour. Our foundation. Our forever MVP.
Happy Mother’s Day to all African mamas.
We honour you—today and always.
